Best Time of Year to Visit Disney World With Kids (and When to Avoid)

The best time of year to visit Disney World with kids is usually early to mid-January after the holidays, late April to mid-May, and the weeks in September and early November outside the big holidays. Those stretches tend to bring smaller crowds, more bearable weather and fewer school-break crowds. Here's how the year breaks down, and which dates to avoid.

The calmest weeks to go

  • Early to mid-January. The holiday rush clears out, and the weather is mild for walking all day.
  • Late April to mid-May. Spring break is over and summer vacation hasn't started. Expect warm days with afternoon sun.
  • September. The heat lingers, but crowds are often lighter once schools are back in session. See our guide to Disney World in October for what comes next.
  • Early November to Thanksgiving week. Holiday decorations start appearing, and the parks are often calmer before the Thanksgiving break.

Weather by season

Central Florida is warm most of the year. Summer is hot and humid with a daily chance of afternoon thunderstorms, so pack ponchos and plan indoor breaks. Winter is cooler and drier, often pleasant in the morning and evening, so bring a light layer for early starts. Spring and fall fall in between. Check the forecast close to your dates.

When to avoid Disney World with kids

The busiest times follow school calendars and holidays. Expect the biggest crowds and highest prices around Christmas and New Year's, Easter and spring break, Thanksgiving week, Presidents' Day weekend and the peak of summer. Dates shift each year, so check current crowd and event information on Disney's website before you book. If you can only travel in peak weeks, our rope drop plan helps you beat the lines.

Pick the best time of year for your family

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: Aim for cooler months so naps and pool breaks are easier. See Disney World with a 3-year-old.
  • School-age kids: Summer and school breaks work, but go in with a plan for heat and crowds.
  • Teens: Fall and spring give you more ride time with shorter waits.
  • Big families: Book early for any peak week. Homes that sleep a crowd fill first.

Why Windsor Hills works in any season

Windsor Hills is a gated resort right beside Walt Disney World. Disney property is about 5 to 10 minutes away by car, and Magic Kingdom is usually about 10 to 12 minutes, depending on traffic. There is no resort shuttle, so plan to drive or use a rideshare. That short hop makes midday breaks easy in summer: head back for a swim in the heated lagoon pool, a splash at Sir Windsor's AquaVenture water park, or a cool-down in your own private pool. Condos, townhouses and villas come with full kitchens and room for the whole family.
