What to Do at Disney World When It Rains

The movie theater room at Windsor Hills Resort, a cozy backup plan for a rainy afternoon

Knowing what to do at Disney World when it rains is easier than most parents fear. Central Florida showers are usually short and warm, and a little planning turns a soggy forecast into shorter lines and a more relaxed day.

Expect a shower, not a washout

In the warmer months, afternoon storms are common and often pass in under an hour. Check the forecast the night before and again in the morning, then plan to stay flexible instead of cancelling a park day. Lightning can pause some outdoor rides, so keep your plans loose and your kids' expectations flexible.

Pack for the rain

  • Lightweight ponchos for everyone, brought from home so you are not paying park prices
  • Quick-dry shoes or sandals, plus a spare pair of socks in a zip bag
  • A waterproof pouch for phones, tickets and cards
  • A small towel for seats and for wiping off wet little hands

Skip big umbrellas. They are awkward in crowds and can block the view for people behind you.

Rides, shows and indoor stops that stay dry

Plenty of attractions are inside, so the rain is a good moment to use them. Look for indoor theater shows, dark rides, and attractions with covered queues, and check the official Disney app or website for what is open on the day. Shops and restaurants make good shelter too, so a sit-down lunch is a natural place to wait out a heavy downpour.

Use the thinner crowds

Many families head for the exit at the first raindrops, which can leave popular rides with shorter waits. If you have ponchos on and the weather is not stormy, a rainy afternoon is a great time to ride the favorites you skipped earlier. Our rope drop plan for off-site families also helps you get the most from the dry morning hours.

Rainy-day backup plans at Windsor Hills

One real perk of staying off-site is having a comfortable base close by. Windsor Hills is a gated resort, and Disney property is about 5 to 10 minutes away by car, with Magic Kingdom around 10 to 12 minutes depending on traffic. If a storm rolls in, you can head back for a break and dry off without losing the day.

There is plenty to do under cover at the resort, from the movie theater room and the games room to the clubhouse. Here is how to fill a wet afternoon:

  • Watch a movie in the theater room
  • Play arcade games and ping pong in the games room
  • Cook a big family meal in your full kitchen and play a board game
  • Dry out, nap, then head back to the parks for the evening

When the sun returns, the lagoon pool is heated, and the Sir Windsor AquaVenture water park and the splash areas are ready for kids who still have energy. Read our guide to the Windsor Hills games room and arcade for more indoor ideas.

Plan ahead with a home that works for rainy days

A private-pool home, condo or townhouse gives a big family space to spread out, dry wet gear and cook without a restaurant wait.
